Background
The Republic of Angola is located in Sub-Saharan Africa, just north of Namibia. At first, Portugal had claimed Angola, but Angola received independence in 1975. Angolians began running their own government and holding elections. Unfortunately, 1975 also saw the beginning of a fierce civil war, which lasted for 27 years, killing approximately 1.5 million people. Even now, they are still rebuilding their country.
Current Affairs
On February 5, 2010, President Dos Santos built a new Constitution for the government of Angola. The country also held an election in 2012. At the moment, they are a Republic. The country's infrastructure, however, is still damaged from the war, and corruption is a big problem as far as the economy goes. The country's major exports are oil and diamonds, which have helped the economy to grow back from the worldwide recession in 2008.
